The Hobbit Reviews

Graces “The Hobbit” Board game
I Liked Graces board game immensely, don’t get me wrong, but I found it slightly repetitive at times and sometimes not that close to the book. I loved the way she had the riddle cards, but some of them she could have chosen either easier riddles, or made her own, as so many people knew the ones from the hobbit already. I liked the way she set the board out, because then you knew where everything was. I also liked the way it wasn’t quite monopoly, it was a pretty unique board game. But I was confused as to what the Sapphires, Emeralds and Rubies related to, because other than the computer game, I don’t remember seeing the Jewels in the book, or maybe that is just me. Overall I think it could have had more to do with the book, and gotten more interactive. It seemed like all you did was move around the board. It was set out well, but at times the game was slightly too complicated, and there may have been too many rules for people to understand. It was good the way it related to the book, there were some good comparisons and relations to the book, such as the riddles and places on the board. Although I enjoyed it, it seemed like every space was a “problem” space, with you having to move backward, or loose a turn or a jewel. There were some “Good” spaces, where you moved forward, but it didn’t seem like many. Overall, I liked the game, but it seemed like, there wasn’t enough thinking put into the game, but it was presented well, and that is almost half of the assessment. I would rate it 3.5/5 overall.

“The Hobbit” Computer Game
I enjoyed the computer game, and I liked the way it represented the book to a younger, or more modern audience. I know for a fact some people would probably actually read the book if they played the computer game first. The game was quite enjoyable, but not something I would usually play on my own, or if we didn’t “have to.” It seemed a bit hard at times, and it also seemed more of a “boy’s” game. The graphics were quite good, and the storyline was as well, although I didn’t know what was going on at the start of the game when it was just the “dream sequence.” It seemed like there were limited abilities you could use, and it confused me at times. As I said before, I think it would appeal to boy’s way more than girls, because I don’t think they would get into this sort of thing, unless they had too. It was sort of, “weird,” in a way, because some of the things that went on didn’t happen in the book, and seemed like just filler. The whole thing related to the book about 75% of the time, but sometimes just rambled on. I guess it would appeal to a younger audience more, because it seems like a smaller child’s sort of thing, yet it was quite difficult at times.

“The Hobbit” Movie
The movie was quite boring. It didn’t make sense at times, and the graphics were laughable. Of course, the movie was for smaller children, but for them, it would seem quite scary. The movie as a whole related extremely well to the book, and although I didn’t enjoy it that much, I still felt quite fascinated to see the movie-makers take on the book.  The movie became quite confusing at times, and a few times I didn’t quite know what was going on. It was an interesting watch, as it was engrossing to see what would happen, and if it related to the book. It was also quite absorbing to see how the people back in the time (Whenever it was made) would make it, as to not scare a younger audience.

The Hobbit

May 18, 2006

‘In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet, hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry bare sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort’
Inside it was warm, with a crackling fire burning away in the southwest corner, and three couched surrounding it, each matched perfectly with each other, the curtains, and the surroundings.

On the cold, story floor there was a great rug, perched almost the whole size of the room. Yes, it was cosy, and that’s just the way this particular hobbit liked it.
“This particular hobbits” name was Bilbo Baggins, and, in a few words, he was fussy. so that’s why this particular day was SO, well, unexpected!

What IS A Hero?

May 18, 2006

“In mythology and legend, a man, often of divine ancestry, who is endowed with great courage and strength, celebrated for his bold exploits, and favored by the gods.

A person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life: soldiers and nurses who were heroes in an unpopular war.

A person noted for special achievement in a particular field: the heroes of medicine.”

I think there are many, as noted above, types of heroes. There are your Movie heroes (Just look at any action movie), your Greek Mythology heroes, and there are your everyday people who wouldnt think of themselves as a hero. Take a doctor. He didnt risk his life (Maybe in old times he might’ve) but he is still saving someones life every day, and he isnt pulling out a gun every 5 minutes to shoot an enemy, to save someones life, and ending someone elses. She/He is curing somebody from a heart disease, or any other kind of disease. I really dont believe that the heroes we see on tv and in movies are HEROES, because what are they doing? if they had’t done it, someone else would have. Its not real. What is real though, is that Firewomen/Firemen are risking THEIR lives, to protect OURS. And  how much recognition are THEY getting?

My Heroes:
Firefighters

Doctors

Police

Thanks for reading. :D

My Country Poem

April 30, 2006

What i have so far:

I love a bright and sunny country

Where it hardly ever gets cold

I love a tanned and burnt country

And the sun is like liquid gold

I love a cheering country

Of happiness, green and gold

Where no matter if your black or white

Or young, middle or old

I love a beach side country

With water far and wide

Frolick, play, fun and sand

Along the rising tide.

Hmm.

Ridge-Book Review

March 2, 2006

Ridge- Dorothy Simmons

This Is a book I found at a book sale in the city, and picked up and thought I might give it a go. It’s a story about a 13 year old girl called Maddie, who is dealing with loosing her horse, Gem. She is going to loose her to her brother Mark, who is dyslexic and is coming home from their aunties ranch. She is riding up along the ridge, (which is where the books name comes from) when she hears a motorbike roaring, which is unusual because they cant usually get up there. She then rides to where she hears it and finds a girl lying half in the shrubs. She recognises her as her friend from Primary School, Kate. She finds out that Kate has been raped, so she takes her to the Local Youth Refuge, which is where the main plot is surrounded. She meets other people there, and they meet Nat, a boy doing a report for college. She tells him her story, and together all three of them ant to do something about it. They hear about a local parade against rape, so they decide to get all the youth kids to go down their on the day and support the parade. Unfortunately the local bikies (including the one that raped her) crash the parade and somone gets hit by one of them. I wont give away the ending though.I Like this book because it is suspenseful, and has lots of things relating to teenage life. I would recommend it to teen girls between the ages of 13-15 because any younger and it would be a bit mature. I would give it a 4.5/5 because the author is a great writer. :)

What Did I Think About Juggling Mandarins?

February 28, 2006
I enjoyed Juggling with mandarins, but it was a bit predictable at times. The book deals with many issues, like a teen growing up with all the trimmings, girls, boys, family and school. I Enjoyed the whole “rock climbing” thing because i love rockclimbing, but i didnt enjoy the whole katie and phil/phillip/pip/pipsqueak thing, because it got a bit boring, and i didnt so much enjoy the mandarin area. But for some reason the teacher in the book reminds me of Ms Tapp… Odd, Eh? My favourite character was probably beattie, allthough i didnt like the name, i dont know why, but she was cool, i like people with attidtude, and im usually not a fan of the main character. The end was a bit predictable, except for the phil and katie saga, i thought they might have ended up together. It could have been different because they could have ended up together. I think the book is called juggling with madarins bacause obviously because of the sub-plot about the juggling, also i think it was called that because phil is trying to juggle all the areas of his life, and trying not to drop them. Overall i would have to give it a 3/5 because i didnt like it that much.
